Ghoori Gol Wetland
Ghoori Gol wetland is located approximately 30 km from Tabriz on Tabriz-Tehran transit road and 18 km from Bostan Abad County. Ghoori Gol is a freshwater wetland with an area of approximately 200 hectares and it is selected as one of the wetlands of Convention Site of Ramsar due to the fact that it is a habitat for breeding of important and endangered species of waterfowl such as white-headed duck, marbled duck, etc.
Ghoori Gol wetland is fed by rainwater, runoffs, springs as well as melting of winter snow (the largest source of the wetland). Due to lack of water in Ghoori Gol wetland, the water transfer project from Sabri Chay river, which is a tributary of Ojan Chay, was executed by constructing a canal in 1993 to prevent the wetland from drying out. The necessary budget was received from donations of the Office of the Supreme Leader. After passing through Nojeh Deh Kooh and Harab villages, this canal is finally transferred to the basin of Ghoori Gol Wetland and the wetland itself, supplying water to the wetland in the non-agricultural seasons.
In Turkish, Ghoori Gol means dry wetland. This wetland is located near Bostan Abad and is considered as one of the still waters of Azerbaijan. It is worth mentioning that Bostan Abad had been built on the site of the ancient and lost city of Ojan. Ojan had been the summer capital of Mongol dynasty, which was later completely destroyed by events. This area is located on the Silk Road, is always densely populated and has large and lush meadows and mineral springs. Therefore, the center of this region is called “Bostan Abad” due to its historical and developmental dimensions (it literally means dense gardens).
